The Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Homicide and Organised Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) reported yesterday (9) that journalist Tharindu Jayawardhana is allegedly obstructing the investigation related to a complaint made by retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Palitha Siriwardena against former Senior DIG and incumbent Public Security Ministry Secretary Ravi Seneviratne concerning the Easter Sunday attacks.
During proceedings at the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court, the said OIC stated that they will conduct a thorough investigation into Jayawardhana’s actions. Accordingly, the Court ordered the OIC to provide an update on their findings by 15 January 2025. The Court heard that Jayawardhana is believed to be influencing the investigation through his YouTube channel, thereby severely hindering the CID’s efforts. The OIC claimed that Jayawardhana’s reporting has created significant challenges for the investigation. As a result, the CID has committed to investigating the journalist’s conduct and will inform the Court of any further actions deemed necessary.
Jayawardhana, who is also the President of the Young Journalists’ Association, has been reporting on the Easter Sunday attacks since it occurred in April 2019. His recent disclosures have included details regarding the activities of Police officers allegedly involved in various incidents related to the attacks.
