Today, accused 1-16 and 18-25 appeared before the Trial at Bar. Witnesses 2053, 1502, 2054, and 2052 were summoned to provide evidence.
Examination of Witnesses:
Witness No. 2053 , a retired Sub-Inspector of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID), testified during the examination-in-chief about handing over the 11th accused to officers assigned to take him to the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO). He was questioned about details in the Judicial Medical Report, particularly why he noted that the 11th accused had a mental illness. Document A3 was presented to the court by the state. After completing the examination-in-chief, the witness was cross-examined and re-examined.
Witness No. 2052 , Sunil Wijesekara, another retired Sub-Inspector of TID, testified regarding his role in escorting the 11th accused to the JMO. Document A2 was presented by the state. His examination-in-chief was followed by cross-examination and re-examination, with specific attention to the involvement of the Human Rights Commission in the complaints lodged against TID.
Witness No. 1509 , a retired Judicial Medical Officer who previously worked at the Colombo Judicial Medical Office, testified about checking the 11th accused, administering medication, and providing recommendations concerning his mental condition. The examination-in-chief, cross-examination, and re-examination were completed.
Witness No. 1502, a current Judicial Medical Officer at Colombo, gave evidenc, and Document A5 was submitted to the court by the state. The witness could not identify the 11th accused, and the examination-in-chief remains incomplete.
Special Incidents:
The medical report of the 13th accused was presented, requesting residential medical treatment.
The judge ordered that the accused be seated in an orderly manner and that convenient seating arrangements be made for those requiring medical attention.
No new summons were issued, as the prosecution’s examination of Witness No. 1502 is still ongoing.
The case is scheduled for the next hearing on October 16, 2024, at 1 PM
